Fume cabinets can be used as part of either a portable system, for example, a local filter kit or a fully-fledged fixed LEV system that extracts and vents captured fumes to the atmosphere or, depending on the process, through a filtration unit. Fume cabinets are available in two sizes as standard, either 400mm (with a 96-litre volume capacity) or; 700mm (with a 350-litre volume capacity).
Fume cabinets are effectively a form of partial enclosure collection booths and protect the surrounding work areas from contaminants from the working process, such as fumes and gases. The University of Birmingham describes the partial enclosure collection booths whereby: “The process is not fully enclosed and the operator can access the workpiece and process, but the air is pulled into the enclosure to remove fumes and gases.”
